iPhone, the precious device of Apple fans, appeared to be a victim of its own success. For a few years now, Apple fans were joking at Windows users and their vulnerable personal computers. They claimed that Apple software was much safer, and it really was. The matter is that Apple gear wasn’t safer because it was meant to be so – it simply was not popular enough to attract the hackers’ attention. Thus, the intruders couldn’t be bothered coming up with exploits for an operating system used by a couple of enthusiasts.
The problem came when Apple regained its footing –
logically enough, it soon drew the attention of nefarious hackers. The
company’s iOS boom was closely followed by the attackers and resulted in the
iPhone becoming the most hackable mobile device at the moment. This was
repeatedly proved by various Internet security groups, including Sourcefire.
Press reports say that the latter revealed that the iPhone was plagued by 210
critical vulnerabilities and exposures (better known as CVEs). This is a very
impressive figure, especially in comparison with other platforms. For instance,
Google’s Android only has 24 CVEs, Windows Phone – 15, and Blackberry seems to
be the safest with only 11 flaws. The most interesting fact is that these
figures are also the numbers of Windows Phone and Blackberry exclusive
applications.
According to the report issued by the security researchers, the vast popularity of iOS devices is the main reason for such abysmal results. In addition, the experts pointed out that Android received fewer CVEs during last year than it did a year before – this is despite the fact that its market share was growing very fast.
